The Bach Festival of Winter Park can trace its beginning to a 1935 concert at Rollins College commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Today's Bach Festival is a two-week, music-packed event that draws the world's most distinguished classical performers to Central Florida. The New York Times recently recognized the Winter Park Bach Festival as "one of the outstanding choral events in the country," and the 150-voice Bach Festival Choir under the direction of Dr. John Sinclair is widely considered to be the finest oratorio choir in the state of Florida and among the best in the US.
The Festival was the dream of Mrs. Isabelle Sprague-Smith, a former New York artist and school principal. Mrs. Sprague-Smith was the driving force behind the festival from 1935 until her death in 1950. During her tenure, the Bach Festival Choir grew to become a true community choir, and the Festival expanded to include instrumental music programs. In 1950, John Meyer Tiedtke took over the reins of the Festival and served as its president until his death in 2004. Mr. Tiedtke's vision was to increase the visibility of the festival nationally by featuring world-class guest artists alongside the local performers.
Today the Bach Festival Society is a thriving organization in Winter Park. Hosted by Rollins College, the Bach Festival of Winter Park is guided by the vision of Music Director and Conductor Dr. John Sinclair. Dr. Sinclair assumed responsibility for the artistic growth and development of the Bach Festival and its choir and orchestra in 1990.
Now in its 71st year, the Bach Festival is one of the longest continuously operating festivals in the United States. Every year the Bach Festival Society pays tribute to its namesake by performing at least one work by Johann Sebastian Bach, but the festival repertoire now also includes a variety of composers and music styles.
